Philosophy

Our philosophy to design is simple. Design from the “Inside Out”. This means the function of the space, the circulation, the equipment/ furnishings, and adjacencies in the space drive the layout.

This involves listening to the user’s functional programmatic requirements and asking questions about aesthetics, work space environments, furnishings, adjacencies, culture, and acoustics. From an industrial perspective, we will also understand any fire rating, contamination controls, personnel logistics and protocols for cleanliness,  equipment, and utility infrastructure requirements. This information will be translated into conceptual floor plans with recommendations and associated 3-Dimensional Concept Renderings for review, discussion, and refinement.

As much as cost and schedule influence projects, we try to stay focused on our client’s design intent throughout development of the project.

We approach technical spaces with functionality and performance in mind. Again the “Inside Out” design approach is utilized, but the equipment and functional room adjacencies for manufacturing product flow is taken into consideration first. Engineering principles for creating energy efficiencies, critical redundant systems, and environments necessary to insure quality are implemented.  Furthermore, budget, maintenance, durability, and best value practices are recommended to the client to make the best decision.

Clean environment spaces are driven by equipment and the environments needed for product and material handling. Design begins with an understanding of process equipment, occupancy, contamination control, cleanliness, personnel protocols, hazard class, and ends with commissioning, energy savings, and overall cost of ownership.  TDS also supports the MEP, Structural, Civil Engineering and Hazmat design teams for critical utility equipment infrastructure pads, rooftop, mezzanine, and central plant requirements.

Our experience allows us to focus on moving client’s challenges into achievable goals. Reviewing proposed chemistries, egress, evaluating existing building conditions, occupancies, establishing allowable building areas, and creating functional room efficiencies for performance, provide early visibility to potential challenges and solutions.

Our approach to meeting with the City’s Building Department EARLY helps identify any “speed bumps” that we should overcome. This partnership helps foster a smoother plan check process and permit issuance.
